C.H.P and Guards Won’t Accept Pay Cuts

Some of Governor Davis´ strongest supporters say they won´t take pay cuts to help solve the state budget crisis.
California Highway Patrol officers and prison guards say they will not give up a hard won raise expected in July. The cost of the raise will be $145 million a year. Davis has asked all state employees to take pay cuts to help solve the state´s $35 billion deficit. He says that includes law enforcement. Davis says he wants $855 million dollars in salary cuts or state workers could face layoffs.
Union representatives for the guards and C.H.P. officers say they have waited a long time for the raise and won´t give them up. Law enforcement unions have been among Davis´ largest campaign contributors.
