Round-Up Kicks-Off Saturday

Sponsored by:

Mother Lode Round-Up 2003 activities begin this Saturday.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Posse has been helping put on the famous event for 47 years now, but Ty Wivell says Round-Up roots go back much farther.

“It actually started in 1916 and the round-up was done at the high school baseball grounds at Sonora High School,” he said.

Wivell, who has been one of the ramrods for the Round-Up over the years, said the round-up began as a Wild West show. “It gradually got bigger and bigger,” he said. They also held a kiddie parade for several years in the late 1930s-early 40s.

Wivell said the actual rodeo stopped during the war years, then it moved to the fairgrounds in the late 1940s. “In 1948 the Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Posse was organized and they helped the fair put on the rodeo during that period of time.”

This year the first event out of the chute is the Great Steak Barbecue, Saturday, 3 to 7 p.m. at the Sheriff´s Posse Grounds in Jamestown.

Queen Horsemanship is Saturday May 3 and the Queen Pageant, Sunday May 4 at the Sonora Elk´s Lodge.

The parade and two days of rodeo is set for Mother´s Day weekend May 10 and 11.
