Donner Lake Train Derailment Cleared

Sponsored by:

Freight and passenger trains are expected to resume service today across the Sierra, three days after a derailment south of Donner Lake blocked the Union Pacific and Amtrak lines.

Union Pacific officials still do not know what caused 13 of 100 cars loaded with corn to jump tracks Tuesday morning. One track was reopened early yesterday and the other is expected to reopen today. Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says crews have been working around the clock to remove the derailed cars and debris. Amtrak has bused passengers for the California Zephyr, which connects Emeryville, California, and Chicago, to the Sparks station. The freight train was going from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Stockton, California, when it derailed between Norden and Truckee. Two crew members on board were not injured.
