Bill Could Have Voters Raise Sales Tax

Sponsored by:

A bill allowing voters to add a quarter cent to sales taxes in their counties has been approved by the California Assembly.

The measure by Assemblyman John Longville would raise about $1.1 billion a year for local transportation projects if all 58 counties adopted the additional levies. Longville describes the bill as a local control measure that would allow voters to solve their own transportation problems.

But Assemblyman Todd Spitzer of Orange says the bill wouldn´t be needed if the state spent more money on transportation. Longville says the tax hike would need approval from county supervisors and two-thirds of voters to take effect

Monday´s 41-30 vote sent the bill to the Senate.
