Fire Season Begins, Already Flames Outside Tracy

Sponsored by:

Today is the official opening day of California´s fire season, and already firefighters have been busy battling a blaze that has burned 2,000 acres in San Joaquin County. Steady winds drove the fast moving grass fire.

The Bird Fire broke out just before noon yesterday in the brown hills southeast of Tracy on the western edge of the Central Valley. Winds of 20 miles per hour helped push the fire on a six-mile run southeast from its starting point toward the California Aqueduct and Interstate Five.

Flames threatened power lines at one point, but not homes. Firefighters hope to have the fire controlled today.
