Settlement in Capitol Crash Comes up Short

Sponsored by:

California has reached a $4 million settlement with the last insurance company that retained liability for extensive damage done when a big rig driver rammed the state Capitol over two years ago.

The settlement brings nearly $10 million in reimbursements to the state from the three companies that insured the trucker€™s employer, Dick Simon Trucking of Salt Lake City. The state spent $11.5 million to repair the damage. That means taxpayers will have to cover the remaining nearly $2 million repair cost.

Truck driver Mike Bowers who had a history of legal and mental problems died when he crashed his 18-wheeler loaded with canned milk into the Capitol in January 2001.
