Carson Fire 50 Percent Contained

Sponsored by:

As evacuated residents in Carson City were allowed back into their homes, some are questioning whether firefighters responded quickly enough to douse the Waterfall fire before it exploded out of control.

Timberline resident Bill Bettridge says it would the community if fire managers provided a timeline on how things unfolded when the fire initially was reported before dawn Wednesday.

Fire bosses agreed to do so, but say erratic winds and trees and brush made tinder dry by five years of drought caused the fire to erupt.

The Waterfall fire is now estimated at about 7,600 acres and 50 percent contained. There is no longer any imminent threat to the Lakeview, Timberline and Silver Oak foothill communities in northwest Carson City, or the Franktown Road area in Washoe Valley.

Incident Commander Kim Martin says an aggressive assault is being made on the fire´s west flank to prevent it from spreading into the Lake Tahoe basin.

Nearly 2,000 firefighters remain on the lines, though Martin says some resources may be released this weekend to other fires in West this weekend.
