Measure I Ballots Being Readied

Sponsored by:

The Tuolumne County Elections office is busy getting Measure I ballots packets ready to mail.

Measure I is the City of Sonora´s 1/2 cent sales tax increase proposal. Only registered voters who live within the city boundaries will see the special mail-in ballot in their mailboxes next week.

An elections spokesperson says about 2,000 official envelopes — containing the single item ballot, plus a copy of the sample ballot and a postage-paid return envelope — will be mailed Tuesday morning, August 3.

She says the only walk-in polling place for this election will be at the Tuolumne County Clerk/Elections office on North Washington Street in Sonora. The elections office expects results to be tabulated soon after the August 31 ballot return deadline.

If the measure passes, Sonora City Administrator Greg Applegates says the additional funding -about $1.2 million a year – will go only to city police, fire and public works departments, all who are reeling from funding cut backs, staffing shortages and old equipment.
