West Nile Virus has now been discovered in Calaveras County, but the county is not alone.

Wednesday, 11 counties reported their first cases of the virus in birds: including Calaveras, Mariposa, Lake, Lassen, Plumas, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Sierra, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba. Tuolumne Country was not on that list.

Stanislaus County had a mosquito and a dead bird test positive for the virus July 24.

A dead scrub jay found in Angels Camp at the end of July tested positive for the virus. This news is not a surprise to Mother Lode health officials, who have been on the lookout for the virus for months.

According to the state Department of Health Services, nearly 1,500 birds have tested positive for the virus statewide.

So far no human cases of the West Nile have been reported in Calaveras County.
