Another West Nile Fatality

Sponsored by:

A San Bernardino County woman has become the 16th person in California to die from the West Nile virus.

Seventy-three-year-old Gisela Hughes died Thursday.

She was diagnosed with the disease after being admitted to Saint Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino for asthma and other complications nearly a month ago.

It was unclear where Hughes contracted the mosquito-borne virus.

But county officials say a stagnant pool on her Highland property had been treated by vector control workers for mosquitos.

West Nile has infected at least 558 Californians this year.

Five have died in San Bernardino County.
