Super Bowl Sunday Breakfast: Another Success

Sponsored by:

More than a thousand people converged on the Mother Lode Fairgrounds yesterday morning for omelettes and fun for the 18th annual Frank Salel Super Bowl Breakfast .

The teams may not have been local, but the excitement and team effort by hundreds of volunteers made the annual breakfast a winner.

Taking a break from running cases of eggs to the cooks inside, event chairman Scott Barry estimates the number of hungry pre-super bowl football fans to be about 1,500 yesterday. That´s a lot of omelettes, fruit, orange juice and croissants .

“We use about 160 pounds of ham, 90 pounds of mushrooms, 60 pounds of green peppers and gallons and gallons of orange juice and milk,” Barry explained yesterday morning while taking a short break from the cooking action. “I don´t know the amount of eggs, but it´s about the equal of 3,000 eggs.”

The Mother Lode tradition was first started in 1987 by Frank Salel and the 49er Rotary Club to raise money for scholarships to Sonora High School seniors.

Frank passed away in 1999, but the tradition of raising money for Sonora High School students continues.
