Increased Sales Tax Subject Of Council Meeting

Sponsored by:

Friday, the Sonora City Council will consider a proposed sales tax increase ballot measure.

During tomorrow´s special session, council members will decide on whether to increase the city´s sales tax. Will the tax increase be a half-cent or a quarter-cent? That´s one of the questions the mayor and council will be addressing. It would provide the city a sorely needed boast in revenue, says Mayor Marlee Powell.

Powell says tomorrow morning´s special meeting is to “firm up whether we will go forward with the sales tax, take it to the citizens or if we will go for some other means of raising revenue.

Powell says upwards of a million dollars of additional revenue a year is possible from the additional sales tax. The mayor says a large percentage of the tax money would stay in the city coffers and go to hiring needed additional police and fire personnel.

The meeting gets underway at 9 a.m. in the downstairs conference room at Sonora City Hall.
