Economic Studies Now Required for Big Box Exemptions

Sponsored by:

Those big-box development studies we told you about this week were approved unanimously this week by the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors.

Last month, the supervisors imposed a general limit of 60-thousand square feet for any single retail store. Any developers who want to get around that restriction must file an application, and now, part of that process will have to include an economic study, reporting what sort of goods would be sold, how many jobs would be gained and lost, and the wages of those jobs.

The studies would be paid for by the requesting developer and completed by a consulting firm approved by the county. However, officials say there are no such projects pending, or on the horizon, for Tuolumne County at this time.
