Forest Service Marketing Plan Uncovered

Sponsored by:

The Associated Press is reporting that Forest Service officials paid a previously undisclosed $113,000 for a sophisticated effort to market controversial changes to a Sierra Nevada management plan this winter.

A secret media strategy leaked to an environmental group outlines two “equally important” goals. The first is to promote the Forest Service´s plan to triple logging in the Sierra as necessary to prevent catastrophic wildfires.

The second is to counter “an apparent atmosphere of mistrust and cynicism about the government´s real intentions.”

Environmental groups say the result oversimplifies the Forest Service´s plans to boost logging — something Forest Service officials deny.

They´re defending the apparently unprecedented decision to hire a PR firm.
