Sierra Club Election Held

Sponsored by:

Leaders of the Sierra Club succeeded in keeping anti-immigration forces off their board during elections held today.

In recent years, an increasingly vocal faction of the San Francisco-based group has cited U-S population growth as the greatest threat to the environment.

Some Sierra Club leaders have seen the elections as an attempt by that faction to take over the 112-year-old organization and its 100 (M) million dollar annual budget.

Candidates picked by the club won all five open seats on the 15-member board.

About a quarter of the group´s nearly 800,000 members voted in the election by mail and e-mail. That´s more than twice the number that voted last year.
