California Attorney General Wants Warning Label On Fries And Chips

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — California´s attorney general wants to add something to French fries and potato chips, warning labels.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer sued 9 fast-food chains and snack-food makers Friday. He wants a court to require Mc-Donald´s, Burger King, Wendy´s, Frito-Lay and other companies to warn consumers that their fries and chips may contain acryl-amide.

A by-product of chemicals and high heat, acryl-amide has been found at low levels in several foods. The state says it´s a potential cancer-causing agent but a Frito-Lay spokeswoman says there´s no scientific evidence to back that.

Lockyer says he´s not telling people to stop eating the snack foods and knows “they sure taste good.” But he says consumers should be able to make informed choices about their food.
