Infant, 3 Adults Killed In Wreck

Sponsored by:

Four people are dead and Highway 88 has reopened after a horrific crash west of Jackson this afternoon.

Amador County based CHP Officer Johnson says the 3-vehicle head-on claimed the life of an infant, 2 men and a woman. It also sent 2 people to the hospital with major injuries. The accident happened about 3 miles west of Jackson on the sinuous highway just after 1 p.m. Johnson says the preliminary investigation indicates that a motorist travelling westbound in a large green Bonneville crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and smashed head-on into another large green Bonneville travelling eastbound. The westbound Bonneville then struck another car headed eastbound. Investigators are still sorting out which victim was in which vehicle.

The wreck completely closed Highway 88 for over 90 minutes. The roadway was cleared and the highway reopened at 3 p.m. The identities of the victims have not yet been released. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
