A routine traffic stop turned into a hostage situation on Dogtown Road in Angels Camp Thursday afternoon.

An Angels Camp police officer was making a routine traffic stop when the suspect, a white male in his 20s, refused to pull over and continued to a house about one mile up Dogtown Road, Calaveras County Sheriff´s Captain Keith Andersen said.

The suspect pulled into a driveway and got out of his car. A woman came out of the home, who he told to get back in the house. The police officer identified himself but the suspect followed her inside.

At that point, the Sheriff´s Department was called in to assist. Angels Camp Police Department remained the lead agency.

A hostage negotiator began work and after two hours without incident, two females, one who appeared to be a juvenile, came out of the house, neither of which were the one officers first saw on the porch.

“They told us there´s no one else inside,” Andersen said. But negotiators soon began communicating with someone else inside.

As of press time Thursday evening, the bomb squad and the fire department were called to the scene.

Andersen said officials were taking their time.

“Our decision revolves around the safety of our officers,” he said.
