The Assembly Judiciary Committee Has Approved Speaker Pro Tem Leland Yee’s Violent Video Game Legislation

A coalition of Girl Scouts, parents, child advocates, psychiatrists, and legal experts spoke out in favor of the legislation to restrict the sale of ultra-violent video games to children.

Assembly bill 450 overwhelmingly passed on a bipartisan 8-0 vote.

“The Judiciary Committee spoke loud and clear today that this bill is not only the right thing to do to protect our children, but it is constitutional as well,” said Speaker pro Tem Yee.

Under the proposal anyone who violates the act may be liable to pay up to $1,000 for each violation. After several studies pointing to increased aggression, Yee, also a child psychologist, introduced similar legislation last year to restrict children´s access to first and third person shooter violent video games.

The assembly bill will likely go to the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism, and Internet Media before heading to a vote on the Assembly floor.
