Cancer Patients Get Treatment Close to Home

The Sonora Regional Medical Center has just opened their own Cancer Center to serve the residents of Sonora and the surrounding area.

An open house was held Wednesday to give the public a chance to see the facility and speak with Doctors, Technicians, and even Lary Davis the President of the Hospital.

Gail Witzlsteiner was also there and she says the opening is exciting because it has been a long time coming; there has been a lot of money raised, new equipment purchased and staff trained to make this all possible. She says they are currently seeing patients and looking forward to serving the community in more ways in the future.

The Cancer Center offers Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and an Infusion Clinic. President Lary Davis feels that it was necessary to offer the Cancer Center services because of the overwhelming number of Tuolumne County residents that were commuting to other hospitals for treatment.

Yvonne, who is a current cancer patient, mentioned at the open house how great it is to have such amazing technology so close to home, and she called the staff at the Cancer Center her angels.

According to hospital staff Sonora is now 1 of only 30 cities in the nation to have an Electronic Portal Imaging Device. That particular machine is one that can pin point exactly what area to treat and has the smallest percentage of exposure to radiation.
