State Officials Leary Of House Energy Bill

Sponsored by:

State officials are saying the House energy bill that is expected to pass today will hamper California´s ability to block offshore drilling or the placement of liquefied natural gas terminals.

Many California legislators are opposed to the bill because they say it will threaten the environment. However, supporters of the bill assert that Democrats haven´t offered a viable alternative to curb the nation´s dependance on foreign oil.

The bill includes $89 billion in tax breaks and grants to the energy industry and consumers, some of which are opposed by President George Bush, but the president is urging passage of the bill anyway.

The Senate has yet to take up the latest version of the legislation.
