Senate Backs Plan To Give Presidential Votes On Popular Vote

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — A bill approved by the Senate Tuesday would throw all of California´s nation-leading 55 Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote.

Supporters say the measure would draw more candidates to the most populous state. California now is often ignored because it is considered to be safely Democratic.

The legislation goes back to the Assembly for a final vote. The interstate compact approved by the Senate is part of a national effort by the National Popular Vote campaign to change the way the nation picks a president.

The bill takes effect only if states with a combined 270 electoral votes, the number now required to win the presidency, also agreed to decide the election by popular vote.
