CHP Has An Eye Out For Drunk Drivers

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The Highway Patrol will be participating in a DUI mini-task force this weekend.

Sonora Area Commander, Lieutenant Mike Ayala says they will be fielding additional units Friday as a result of an Office of Traffic Safety grant.

The extra money provides more hours for officers to specifically direct their efforts at the detection of alcohol and drug impaired drivers in Tuolumne County.

Ayala says that from 2003 to 2005 there were more than 300 DUI-related traffic collisions in the county, and 18 resulted in fatalities.

“Every year, members of our community are needlessly maimed and killed on our roads. Our goal it to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of drunk driving,” said Ayala.

He believes that by publicizing their efforts they can deter motorists from drinking and driving.

“Our top priority is to send a clear message to those who are considering mixing alcohol or drugs with driving- the California Highway Patrol will be keeping an eye out for you.”
