Man Faces Gun Charges After Campground Scuffle

Tuolumne City, CA — A domestic disturbance involving gunfire in Tuolumne City Tuesday night landed a Fremont man in jail.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department says when deputies arrived at the River Ranch Campground to investigate reports of gunfire; they found David Champion and a female companion coming out of their motor home.

Reports indicate Champion had a laceration and scratches on his hands and chest. The couple told deputies they´d been in an argument and had been throwing things around the campsite.

During the argument, Champion fired a .357 revolver into the air. He also had three other guns in his possession.

Deputy M. Brouillette arrested Champion for possession of an unregistered loaded firearm, and public intoxication and transported him to the county jail.

Officials say the charge of possessing a loaded weapon in public becomes a felony when the weapon is not registered to the person who has possession of it.
