Federal Agency Designates Critical Habitat For Red-Legged Frog

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA – More than 450,000 acres have been designated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as protected habitat for the California red-legged frog.

Environmentalists say that amount of protection is still too low.

Federal officials say they will work together with ranchers who have populations of the threatened frog on their land to make their operations more compatible with the frog´s needs.

The red-legged frog population, made famous by a Mark Twain story, has declined sharply in the past century. Environmental groups aren´t happy.

Their representatives say the amount of land designated as critical habitat is a drastic reduction in the 4.1 million acres initially proposed five years ago.
