Controversy Continues Over Hindu Religion In Schools

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The state Board of Education has voted on proposed changes to the way Hinduism is portrayed in middle school textbooks, and Hindu groups complain the outcome did not do enough to remove offensive material.

Two groups had sought to remove or soften language on the role of women and the caste system in ancient India, but the board adopted only some of their proposals.

Some Hindu groups — including the Vedic Foundation, say the books derogatory toward Hindu schoolchildren in California. Meanwhile, scholars at several universities say the changes adopted do correct the most egregious representations in the texts. California´s textbooks are revised every six years.
