Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The state´s top school official says the most important thing California can do to improve student achievement is get better teachers.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O´Connell delivered his annual State of Education address Tuesday in Sacramento.

He called on the state legislature to spend $53 million for teacher coaches in the lowest performing schools. And he wants to offer teachers incentives to work in those schools.

O´Connell says the need for highly qualified teachers comes at the same time California is expected to see around a third of its teachers, or 100,000, retire in the next decade.

O´Connell also says he´ll redesign the state´s regulations so they´re compatible with federal standards.
