California Congressmen, Back From Iraq, See Challenges, Progress

Sponsored by:

Three California congressmen have returned from Iraq, saying they are optimistic about troop morale and progress training Iraqi forces.

But they are concerned about the threat from roadside bombs like the one that wounded ABC anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter and congressmen Ken Calvert and Mike Thompson spent several days in Tikrit, Fallujah, Baghdad and the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in western Germany.

Hunter says improvised explosive devices are cheap and low-tech for insurgents to make and plant in the path of U-S troop convoys and will be a major challenge for American forces for years to come. Hunter and Thompson say, despite that threat, troop morale is good.
