Wildlife Service Proposes Frog Habitat In Calaveras County

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to designate 4,400 acres northeast of Valley Springs as critical habitat for the famous red-legged frog, which is on the federal list of species threatened with extinction.

The designated-habitat proposal comes from a court decision after years of lawsuits filed by developers and property owners.

The red-legged frog population, made famous by a Mark Twain story, has declined sharply in the past century. Property owners fear that by designating the land as habitat, it could someday prevent them from selling it for a good price.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is taking comments from the public until February 1st. The proposal can be viewed at www.fws.gov/sacramento/
