Sonora PD Receives OTS Grant

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Over $160,000 in extra funding was recently received by the Sonora Police Department thanks to a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

It is part of a project referred to as the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program.

The first phase deals with the purchase of new traffic safety/enforcement equipment. The Sonora PD has purchased 10 radar units that will be installed in patrol vehicles, along with one portable handheld unit.

The department will soon purchase a sobriety checkpoint trailer, which will help catch drivers under the influence and those without an active license.

The grant also allows the department to spend more time educating the public about traffic safety, and have more officers on the street during large events such as Mother Lode Round-up and the Mother Lode Fair.

A police department spokesperson says the overall goal is to lower the traffic accident rate and remove intoxicated drivers from the roadway.
