T.C. Supervisors To Tackle New Melones Issue

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A major item on today’s Tuolumne County supervisorial agenda; consideration of approving a comment letter on the New Melones Lake Area Draft Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement. This letter will be sent to the Bureau of Reclamation.

The Board will address a number of issues of concern including overall access, wildlife management, roads, recreational enhancements, fire, vegetation and fuel management, law enforcement, power and any water rights associated with New Melones.

According to Deputy CAO Daniel Richardson, “The greatest concern for the county is access making sure we can take advantate of this  treasure that was man-made. One is the Peoria Wildlife Management Area. We’ve had access through Old Peoria Flat and Shell Rd. area and right now that’s blocked off. A lot of climbers, a lot of recreationists would like to make use of that. Right now it’s blocked off. It was a historic road that is not included for access and we want to make sure that it is opened back up.”
