Sonora City Administrator Reacts To State Budget

Sponsored by:

Sonora City Administrator Greg Applegate refers to the potential state budget as one of smoke and mirrors.

Applegate was Friday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

The planned state budget would take away over $100,000 from the City of Sonora in gas tax, remove about $129,000 in redevelopment money and if activated, take Prop 1a money in excess of $100,000.

Retail revenue for Sonora is already down about 15%, while property tax remains flat.

Applegate feels he has already made plenty of cuts and what the state is doing will be a disaster for the city.

Applegate said if there are any future bright lights it would have to be in economic development and eventual family wage jobs. Ultimately the city lives and dies by sales tax revenue.

If Lowes is able to open soon, then that store alone would bring in an estimated $35 million in generated income, according to Applegate.

The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard on AM 1450 KVML each weekday at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
