Sponsored by:

An Australian Shepard dog currently at the Humane Society of Tuolumne County has been picked to become a US Army Camp mascot in Iraq.

Casie Jachetta, The Director of Marketing for the Humane Society of Tuolumne County, was Thurday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

According to Jachetta, US Army Sergeant Baty contacted Tuolumne County resident Sherry Galka, to ask for her help in finding a dog that was suited to be a Mascot and accompany US troops at an Army Camp in Iraq. Galka is the Director and Evaluator for Therapy Dog International.

Galka contacted the Humane Society and asked to take a look at the dogs. With the help of both the Director and the staff, Galka knew within ten minutes that she found an ideal dog for the US Army.

Sophie is a two year old Australian Shepard Queensland Heeler mix.

Galka is currently working with Sophie now through early August. On August 7th, Sophie will be leaving Tuolumne County and will fly to new Jersey will she will be put through the Army’s "basic training" for three weeks.

Once Sophie arrives in Iraq, she will be the Division’s Mascot. She will remain at Camp, where she will provide support, friendship and therapy to the US Troops as they’re coming in and out.
