Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department Breathing A Sigh Of Relief

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department is thankful a detective suffered no more than a flesh wound when he was shot Wednesday afternoon.

The detective was involved in a vehicle chase of a stolen car when he was stopped on Railroad Flat Rd. west of Swiss Ranch Rd. The unidentified detective was fired upon by 29 year old Michael D. Thompson of Mokelumne Hill. He was hit in the shoulder but, according to Sheriff Dennis Downum, he was treated and released from Mark Twain-St. Joseph’s Hospital between 8-9pm.

Downum comments that Thompson is extremely well known in the county’s law enforcement community. Thompson was shot several times by deputies and was airlifted to Modesto Memorial Hospital and reported to be in serious condition.

The Sheriff’s Department and the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office will conduct separate investigations. The two detectives have been placed on administrative leave.
