The Sonora Certified Farmers Market Returns

With the return of sunny skies and hot temperatures, it must be time for the Sonora Certified Farmers Market.

City of Sonora Special Events Coordinator, Sheala Wilkenson, was the Wednesday KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

Wilkenson said that the Sonora Certified Farmers market opened up two weeks ago and will now run every Saturday morning through October.

For the consumer, the term “certified” means that the farmer is selling his or her food directly to those attending the market. If a market isn’t certified, it means that the seller bought the food from a farmer for resale. The purchaser isn’t necessarily assured of the foods origin.

Craft booths can also be found at the Farmers Market. Wilkenson said that the City requires that all crafts sold are made directly by those who are doing the selling.

The Farmer’s Market runs every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. through October 17th and is located on Theall and Stewart Street in Downtown Sonora.

Wilkenson also took time to remind the public that the Sonora Opera Hall is available for rent or lease through the City.

“The rental costs are low and we will feature the public event on our website,” Wilkenson said. “But keep in mind, it’s also a great place for weddings, receptions, recitals etc.”
