Massive Budget Cuts To Hit Summerville High School District

Tuolumne, CA — Massive budget cuts are on the way for the Summerville Union High School District.

Superintendent Dr. John Keiter and his Board are looking to cut $324,000 this year and $376,000 the following year due to the inaction of the Sacramento legislature.

Meeting last week the Budget Advisory Committee brainstormed a number of ideas including sharing services with other districts, charging for transportation, eliminating late bus service, eliminating small classes, cutting tutoring and reducing academic counseling.

In addition Keiter and the Board are considering reducing crisis counseling, eliminating campus supervision, eliminating after school music lessons, capturing retirement savings, deleting one class for seniors, increasing class sizes, eliminating driver education, eliminate staff development, use e-mail rather than U.S. postal Service for parents, eliminating student planner books, eliminating general funded field trips, cutting the student activities advisor assignment to one period, reduce athletics, reduce Board stipends-benefiets, raise facility use fees, reallocate teachers’ seven hours of supervision to high need assignments, reduce administration, reduce teacher work days, apply across the board cuts and make maintenance cuts that do not fail to adequately maintain facilities.

The Budget Advisory Committe’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 19 at 6pm in the school library.
