Calaveras County Loses Major Motion Picture

Sponsored by:

A major motion picture pulled out of Calaveras County on Tuesday, to film instead in Vancouver, Canada.

Calaveras County Film Commissioner, Lisa Mayo, was KVML’s Thursday Newsmaker of the Day.

Mayo said, "We were at the point where hotel rooms were completely booked up and we were all progressing right along… and all of a sudden they decided to move the entire movie to Canada."

Without identifying the film, Mayo said that a major reason for the sudden relocation is due to the inviting tax incentives that filmmakers receive, not only from other States, but in this case, other Countries.

With the pullout of this particular film, Mayo estimates that the total loss to Calaveras County will be around $3 million dollars in terms of hotels, retail shopping, restaurants and other expenditures

Mayo hopes that the State of California recognizes the statewide problem soon and brings Hollywood production back to the State. California is losing billions of dollars that otherwise would have stayed within its own borders.

The Newsmaker of the Day can be heard each weekday morning at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47 on AM-1450 KVML.
