Sierra Snowpack Well Below Average

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The second Sierra Snow Survey of the year carried out by the Department of Water Resources shows that California’s snowpack water supply is 61% of normal for this time of year.

The northern Sierra is at 49%, the central is 63% and the southern is 68%.

“This is the third consecutive year that we’re seeing precipitation figures running below normal,” says DWR Spokesperson Don Strickland. “Basically it is more of the same.”

With only two months left in what is normally the wettest part of the season, Strickland says it is growing increasingly unlikely that enough precipitation will fall to end the state’s current drought.
