California’s Oldest Juvenile Facility Closing

Sponsored by:

Ione, CA– The state’s oldest operating facility for juvenile offenders is shutting down, according to state corrections officials.

An official with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said this week that the Preston Youth Correctional Facility in remote Amador County will be closed because of more youthful offenders being held at county facilities. The 224 youths being held at the correctional facility will be transferred to other facilities no later than June 2011, says CDCR Secretary Matthew Cate.

The Preston facility was built specifically to house and rehabilitate juveniles and is located in Ione, about 50 miles southeast of Sacramento.
