California Budget’s Effect On Education

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — When it comes to California’s new budget approved last week, Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Joe Silva has some concerns.

“There will be some new dollars coming in for education, but the Governor then said there is going to be a deferral of over a billion and a half dollars,” he says. “Instead of us just getting the money, they are going to defer it to next school year. That really has an impact on the cash flow for all of the schools in the state.”

Silva says there are positives in the budget, but many feel it is constructed like a “house of cards” that could easily fall. Silva expects the incoming Governor to call for mid-year budget cuts. Education leaders will learn more about the budget’s affect on education in the coming weeks and months.
