The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee is only two weeks away and last night, the Fair Board held a preview for the media.

Miss Calaveras County candidates were present and introduced themselves shortly after each of the four Saddle Queen contestants.

The Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee runs from May 13 through 16.

The first event for the public however, will take place this Saturday night May 1st, as the “Friends of the Calaveras County Fair” will host “the Whiskarino dinner dance”.

The Director of the Friends of the Calaveras County Fair, Jeff Johnson, was Thursday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

According to Johnson, the Whiskarino dates back to the 1940s. The event originally marked the monthlong Jumping Frog Jubilee celebration at the Gun Club adjacent to the fairgrounds. Men participated in (beard) whisker competitions. The event was attended by male and female spectators.

This Saturday, men may compete in the following categories: full beard, trimmed beard, fancy mustache and most effort for least results. A costume contest for all ages, including awards for the best-dressed couple, family, male and female will be part of the festivities.

The 2010 Whiskarino will be held at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Mark Twain Hall. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $18 per person or $30 per couple. The price of the ticket includes admission, dinner and entertainment. Tickets are available at the fair office March 1.

The Friends of the Calaveras County Fair is a nonprofit organization comprised of members dedicated to the history and preservation of the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee. For more information call the fair office at 736-2561.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
