School Secretary Accused Of Embezzlement
Groveland, CA – A former Tenaya Elementary School Secretary has been accused of embezzling student funds.
District Attorney Donald Segerstrom says his office has filed a criminal complaint charging Deborah Kay Carver with one count of Grand Theft and one count of Petty Theft With a Prior Conviction. Both charges are felonies and carry a maximum penalty of three years in prison.
It is alleged that during the 2007-08 school year, Carver embezzled funds that were intended for deposit into the Associated Student Body account.
“These funds come from parents, students, fundraisers and various sources,” says Segerstrom.
Former Superintendent Mari Brabbin was the first to bring the allegations to the attention of law enforcement. Brabbin noticed in an independent audit that the district was unable to provide documentation of accounting controls on the Associated Student Body account.
Carver was arraigned on the charge today and a preliminary examination is set for May 7th. An investigation is ongoing into how much money was allegedly embezzled.
