S.P.I. Will Reopen Quincy Mill

Sponsored by:

Quincy, CA — Sierra Pacific Industries has announced plans to reopen its small log mill in Quincy and restore 35 jobs.

The company closed the small log mill in May of 2009 due to weak markets and lack of timber supply.

Company spokesperson Mark Pawlicki says it is "good news-bad news," as the company is also forced to cut back staff at its large log mill in Quincy from two shifts to one due to the lack of available larger diameter logs.

As for a possible re-opening of the Standard Mill, Pawlicki states, "We have not made any decisions yet."

"Log availability is still a problem," he adds.

Pawlicki says a series of lawsuits filed by the Center for Biological Diversity against 15 SPI Timber Harvesting Plans in January has jeopardized the potential to restart mills that were recently closed.

He says S.P.I. is still hopeful of eventually reopening the Standard mill.
