C.H.P. Reports Drastic Increase In New Years M.E.P. Numbers

Sacramento, CA — California is off to a very poor start for the new year when it comes to traffic related fatalities.
According to the C.H.P. preliminatry Maximum Enforcement Period (M.E.P) statistics for the New Year’s weekend 24 people were killed statewide in 19 fatal collisions over the 78 hour period beginning Thursday at 6pm and ending Sunday midnight. Nine of those killed were not wearing their seat belts including one (Sharlee Weston) in Tuolumne County.
Last year there were 19 deaths in 17 fatal collisions.
Those arrested for driving-under-the-influence were also up this year. Over this past weekend 1,252 were arrested on DUI charges. Last year that number was 986.
