Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA– California has been awarded millions of dollars in federal grant money to improve early childhood programs.

Nine states, including California received $500 million as part of the Obama administration’s education initiative called “Race to the Top.”

It has states competing for federal education dollars in exchange for programs it favors. The goal is to get more children ready for kindergarten.

California was awarded $52.6 million.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said, “I’m grateful to President Obama for recognizing the potential of regional partnerships to improve child care programs across our state. In these challenging fiscal times, winning this grant will help parents find and use the best programs possible without additional costs to parents or taxpayers.”
