New Political Maps For California

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA– The first draft of new political maps in California will be released Friday.

The Associated Press reports that the maps are being drafted by an independent citizen’s panel and is expected to influence the kind of politicians sent to Sacramento and Washington.

Back in 2008, the 14-member California Citizens Redistricting Commission was established by voters under Proposition 11. Supporters hope it will encourage more moderate politicians and lessen political gridlock. The commission will release the first draft of its maps tomorrow, with the final versions in August.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says most states have their political boundaries drawn by the Legislators or commissions appointed by the parties or governors.

New state political maps may have an impact on the Mother Lode districts of Assemblyperson Kristin Olsen, Senator Tom Berryhill , Congressman Jeff Denham, and Congressman Dan Lungren.
