Going Green With Old Tires

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA– Last year Tuolumne County residents recycled 2,471 tires in free tire amnesty events.

Because April is Tire Amnesty Month, there is now another tire collection event being conducted. The county hopes to collect even more tires this year at two available drop off locations.

Tires can be brought to the Cal Sierra Transfer Station by appointment until the end of the month. Appointments can be made by calling 533-7997. Tires can also be taken to the Groveland Transfer Station at 10700 Merrell Road during normal business hours, Wednesday and Saturday’s from 8 am to 4 pm.

Tires collected from these events may eventually end up as rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC) or Tire-derived aggregate (TDA). RAC is pavement material made with grounded waste tires that is more durable, safer and quieter than traditional asphalt. TDA is a high performing, innovative material used for civil engineering projects like landslide repairs and railway vibration mitigation.
