Injured Firefighter’s Condition Improves

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — CAL Fire reports 39 year old Firefighter, Nathan Fyock, who was hit by a car while working the Penn Fire in Murphys yesterday, is now in stable condition. They say Fyock, who suffered major injuries, underwent surgery overnight at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. CAL Fire says Fyock is in good spirits this morning.

CAL Fire had parked an engine across Skunk Ranch Road so that no vehicles would drive near the blaze. CHP says the smoke became so thick that Kirsten Vader of Murphys could not see the engine up ahead and drove her Mazda Miata into Fyock, who was standing alongside the roadway. The Miata then side swiped the fire engine.

Vader was not hurt in the crash. The CHP reports that there was nearly “zero visibility” at the time of the accident.

Fyock has been a seasonal firefighter with CAL FIRE for five years assigned to CAL FIRE’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit.

CAL FIRE has also activated a Serious Accident Review Team (SART) as part of standard departmental procedures for injuries and vehicle damage.
