An Audit For The State’s Specialty License Plate Program

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA – Governor Jerry Brown has ordered an audit of California’s specialty license plate program.

This comes after an Associated Press review found an oversight on the $250 million raised since the program first started 20 years ago.

A governor’s spokeswoman says the administration is asking its Department of Finance to investigate the discrepancies. An investigation this week notably looked at the September 11 license plate program, which was advertised as a way to help victims children attend college, and fund anti-terrorism efforts.

An Associated Press report found that $15 million has been collected since 2002, and only $80,000 has gone to scholarships. While around 40% has gone to anti-terrorism training programs, $3 million was used by Governors Schwarzenegger and Brown to plug budget deficits.
