Angels Camp Council Holds Year’s End Meeting
Angels Camp, CA – This week’s City of Angels Council meeting, the last one for 2018, will include the swearing in of council members and service recognitions.
Recently elected new council member Alvin Broglio and Mayor Amanda Folendorf, who was reelected to the council, will both take their oaths of office. The mayor will also present outgoing Councilmember Scott Behiel with a certificate of appreciation from the city and recognize the service of Building Inspector Steve Flaigg.
Among regular agenda matters, the members anticipate accepting a grant of nearly $290,000 from the state’s Department of Justice Tobacco Grant program that will be dispersed over the next three years. Obtained by Angels Camp Police Chief Scott Ellis in an effort to fund a fulltime School Resource Officer and other resources to help support tobacco reduction programs aimed at the area’s juvenile population, the grant application received backing from Bret Harte High and Calaveras County Public Health officials.
Staff is also recommending that the council approve its recommendation to close City Hall and the Community Development Offices to the public on Fridays. According to the meeting documents, with a switch to using more consultants, there is not enough staff onsite to keep the doors open to the public five days a week. Under the proposal, staff would still be in office Fridays and continue to work existing schedules.
The council has also slated to initiate a discussion of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., which authorizes states to begin collecting sales and use taxes from online and out-of-state retailers without a physical presence in California. State lawmakers are currently considering legislation to move forward on fairly implementing the decision, described as potentially the most important development in tax law in decades — expected to bring in up to $1 billion annually in additional state and local tax revenue.
Tuesday’s meeting opens to the public at 6 p.m. at Angels Firehouse (1404 Vallecito Road) following a 5:30 closed conference with legal counsel.
